Hologic Launches Panther Trax for High Volume Molecular Testing

Hologicannounced that it has completed regulatory filings needed to make Panther Trax® available in a number of countries and regions. Launch of Panther Trax represents the latest addition to the Panther® Scalable Solutions portfolio of products, offering the ultimate in lab automation by physically linking multiple Panther instruments together into a single, powerful workcell that allows labs to increase testing volumes without increasing staff.

Panther Trax is now listed as a Class I medical device with the United States Food and Drug Administration, CE-marked for diagnostic use in Europe, and will also be commercially available in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The Panther system, initially launched in Europe in 2010, offers random access and full automation for molecular testing. It provides a broad assay menu that includes tests for women’s health, sexually transmitted infections, respiratory health, viral load and COVID-19 testing, as well as Open Access™ functionality for laboratory developed tests. This broad menu enables labs to consolidate molecular testing onto a single platform. The Panther system serves as the foundation for optional add-ons including: Panther® Fusion, which launched in 2017 and provides additional IVD menu and the Open Access functionality to run LDTs; Panther® Plus, which gives labs greater flexibility, walk-away time and throughput; and Panther® Link, which virtually connects multiple instruments to share data and reagents while providing a centralized dashboard to monitor all instruments.

A novel azapeptide editing method provides potential for new drug development, Feinstein Institutes research shows

Peptides, short sections of proteins made up of chains of amino acids, are an important area of new drug development due to their potential for increased specificity and fewer side effects. Their main drawback is the rapid degradation by the body’s own enzymes, which has led to the need to develop longer-lasting peptide alternatives. Azapeptides are one type of peptide alternative that has shown great potential as therapeutics, exemplified by the HIV drug, Atazanavir. A new paper published in the journal Nature Communications by researchers at The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research details proprietary reagents and methods that can selectively replace only those amino acids known to be targeted by enzymes with more stable versions to create azapeptides. The paper, authored by Yousef Al-Abed, PhD, co-director of the Institute of Bioelectronic Medicine at the Feinstein Institutes, describes the proprietary building blocks and method used to conduct systematic and robust peptide editing, replacing targeted amino acids with aza-amino acids to form more stable and efficient azapeptides. The azapeptides created could expedite the novel therapies to treat many diseases and conditions, including metabolic disease, influenza, pulmonary arterial hypertension, Crohn’s disease, arthritis, and irritable bowel diseases, among others. The paper, titled “Thiocarbazate building blocks enable the construction of azapeptides for rapid development of therapeutic candidates,” provides multiple examples of azapeptide construction, screening, and selection using a known peptide inhibitor of inflammation and bradykinin. “Peptides as drug candidates are easy to discover yet difficult to develop as final drugs because of their fast degradation in our body. A technology that circumvents these problems inherent to native peptides will change the future landscape of drug discovery. Our technology provides a platform of tools that enable minimal modification of any peptide at highly prone degradation sites, thereby increasing its life span in our body, allowing it more time to find its target and neutralize it.” Dr. Al-Abed Through peptide editing, going from peptide to azapeptide, using methods that Dr. Al-Abed and his team detail in the new paper, scientists can create potential therapies that have enhanced characteristics compared to natural peptides, like longer stabilities in a more efficient manner. Dr. Al-Abed and his team have precisely engineered thiocarbazates (a novel functional group) in the proprietary process to achieve an almost universal and more efficient means to selectively replace amino acids in a peptide chain. “Peptide drugs are a crucial resource for patients and the global pharmaceutical industry,” said Kevin J. Phio Pharmaceuticals Announces New Clinical Program to Study PH-762 for the Treatment of Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Novavax Announces Pricing of $150 Million Offering of Convertible Senior Notes

The notes are being offered and sold only to persons reasonably believed to be qualified institutional buyers pursuant to Rule 144A under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended. In connection with the offering of the notes, Novavax has granted to the initial purchasers a 30-day option to purchase up to an additional $25.25 million aggregate principal amount of the notes. The offering of the notes is expected to close on December 20, 2022, subject to customary closing conditions. The notes will represent senior unsecured obligations of Novavax and will accrue interest payable semi-annually in arrears and will mature on December 15, 2027, unless earlier converted, redeemed or repurchased.
