Mandated drug-disposal programs arrive in 2017

A new law will soon mandate pharmaceutical manufacturing companies that either sell or distribute medications to provide Massachusetts residents with more opportunities to dispose unused, unwanted pills. The aim is to reduce the ubiquity prescription medication as the state grapples with an epidemic of substance abuse. The entirely new chapter added to Massachusetts General Laws was part of the opioid bill, "An Act relative to Substance Abuse, Use, Treatment, Education and Prevention," signed by Gov. Charlie Baker in March.
