To Reach Mars, We Need Biotechnology

CLARA RODRÍGUEZ FERNÁNDEZ | March 23, 2019 | 176 views

As we prepare for long-distance space travel and life on Mars, biotechnology could be the only possible solution to make spaceships no longer dependent on Earth’s constant supply. “As human beings, we need a constant supply of oxygen. We need constant access to nutritious food, clean water, and a safe and clean waste disposal system,” said Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti during a live stream from the International Space Station (ISS).

How Can Medical Cannabis Help to Manage Pain Conditions? – The Cannabis Exchange

Article | February 11, 2020

Pain management is one of the most common reasons for the use of medical cannabis products. However, despite many jurisdictions – including Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands – now allowing the prescription of medical cannabis for this purpose, there remains little ‘high-quality’ evidence to support, or oppose its efficacy. Madden et al. (2018) set out to review the evidence available in order to determine the efficacy of medical cannabis when employed in the management of various forms of musculoskeletal pain. The researchers analysed various studies that assessed the use of cannabinoids in the treatment of arthritis pain; back pain; postoperative pain; and trauma-related pain. It is estimated that up to 30% of the population may suffer from a non-cancer-related pain condition. As such a high percentage of people suffer from these conditions, the development of simple and safe therapies is an essential area of research. This is particularly important as the therapeutic options for people with chronic pain are increasingly limited.

Can scientists leverage mysterious mossy cells for brain disease treatments?

Medical Xpress | July 26, 2018

A small population of brain cells deep in a memory-making region of the brain controls the production of new neurons and may have a role in common brain disorders, according to a study from scientists at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. The scientists, who published their work in Neuron, showed that "mossy cells" in the hippocampus regulate local stem cells to control their production of new neurons, which is important for normal learning and memory, stress response, and mood regulation. Such neurogenesis in the adult brain is disrupted in many common conditions including Alzheimer's disease, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury, and some forms of epilepsy. Targeting mossy cells to reverse such disruption may, therefore, offer a new strategy for treating these conditions.
